Thinking about accessibility at home means thinking about something very basic: moving freely, without depending on anyone. And if there are stairs in the way, that freedom can be complicated. Then comes the question many people ask themselves at some point: how much does a stair lift cost?
Well, in Spain, in 2025, there are many different options, both in terms of models and prices. There's no single answer, because it depends greatly on each case. But let's look at the most important aspects so you have a realistic idea and can make an informed decision.
Types of stairlifts and approximate prices
The first thing to know is what type of stairlifts exist. Not all serve the same purpose or cost the same, of course. Here are the most common ones:
- Stairlift for straight stairs:: The simplest and also the cheapest. If the staircase doesn't have any unusual curves or landings, it can cost between €1,800 and €3,500, more or less.
- Curved stairlift:If the staircase has turns or multiple flights, a custom rail is required, which makes the entire project more expensive. The price is usually between 5,000 and 10,000 euros.
- Stairlift platforms:: For wheelchair users. They are larger and more powerful. In this case, the price ranges from 7,000 to 15,000 euros, depending on the route and any extras added.
- Stair climbing caterpillars:They're portable, not installed. They work well for climbing straight stairs with assistance and typically cost between €2,600 and €5,000.
- Vertical lifts:A type of mini-lift for negotiating short elevation changes. The cost can range from €6,000 to €10,000.
Why does the price change so much?
Good question. It's not just the type of machine. There are other details that have a significant influence:
- The shape of the staircase is key. If it's straight, everything is easier and cheaper. But if there are curves or landings, the job becomes more complicated.
- Then there's the type of equipment. A simple chair doesn't cost the same as a platform designed for wheelchairs, which carries more items behind it.
- The finishes also add up. There are chairs that swivel on their own, rails that fold down to avoid getting in the way... all of this adds to the cost, of course.
- And the brand. Some offer a longer warranty, smoother rides, or more durable materials. But that, of course, also comes at a price.
There are more costs (although they are not always taken into account)
In addition to the price of the stairlift itself, you should consider some extras that may appear. Sometimes they aren't mentioned at first, but they are there:
- Maintenance:: It's normal to have a service once a year. Depending on the model, it can cost between 150 and 300 euros.
- Electricity: Almost nothing. A stairlift typically uses about 0.024 kWh per hour. In other words, very little.
- Small works:In some cases, you may need to adapt a plug, reinforce a step, or something similar. It's not common, but it can happen.
What VAT applies?
You have to be careful here. The same VAT rate isn't always applied, and it depends on how the facility is classified:
- The usual is a 21%.
- If the installation is included as an improvement in a habitual residence, 10% may be applied.
- 4% is reserved for very specific products, such as some technical aids. It is rarely used in stairlifts.
The best thing to do is ask the company that installed it directly. They usually know what percentage can be applied in each case.
Available grants and subsidies
When calculating how much a stairlift costs, you can't forget this. Because yes, there are subsidies, and in many cases, they're significant.
- The State Housing Access Plan 2022–2025 contemplates this type of facility, both in homes and in communities.
- In addition, each autonomous community or city council may offer different aid. In some cases, they cover up to 60% of the cost, although this depends on the specific situation.
And something useful: many companies not only explain how to apply, but they also take care of the paperwork for you.
Average prices in 2025 (summary)
In case you need to clarify this, these are the approximate ranges we're seeing this year:
- Straight chair: 1,800 to 3,500 €
- Curved chair: 5,000 to 10,000 €
- Platform: 7,000 to 15,000 €
- Portable caterpillar: 2,600 to 5,000 €
- Vertical lift: 6,000 to 10,000 €
With this, you can get a realistic idea before you start requesting quotes.
Before asking for a quote, some tips
Here are some things worth doing before contacting companies:
- Take photos and measure the stairs:The more details you have, the better they can guide you.
- Request three closed quotes:. That they include everything: equipment, installation, VAT, and any extras.
- Ask if they manage grants:Some do and save you a lot of paperwork.
- Get informed about the warranty, technical service and maintenance:. It's not all about the initial price: what comes next counts too.
