Features of Pneumatic Lifts

Do you want to know the characteristics of pneumatic lifts? We will tell you about them here. Specialists in Vertical Mobility.

Do you know pneumatic lifts? They are the strongest competition to electric lifts and are becoming increasingly popular. Unlike other types, these work thanks to a vacuum system that makes the cabin move up and down inside a cylinder. But what is the reason for their popularity? Well, the characteristics of pneumatic lifts make them very attractive.

So, below we are going to analyze why they are a smart choice for your home or business. You will discover why they are so easy to install, how they work and what their main benefits are. Keep reading!

How does a pneumatic lift work?

Pneumatic lifts work by taking advantage of a very simple physical principle: differences in air pressure.

Imagine a sealed vertical cylinder, inside which a cabin moves, this would be the rail where the lift moves.

By removing air from the top of this cylinder, a partial vacuum is created. This difference in pressure between the inside and outside of the cabin causes it to be “sucked” upwards. To descend, the air is simply allowed to re-enter the cylinder, and the cabin lowers by gravity. Its main components are:

  • Cylinder: is the vertical structure that contains the cabin and through which it moves.
  • Cabin: This is the part where passengers travel.
  • Vacuum pump: this part is responsible for extracting the air from the cylinder, creating the vacuum necessary to raise the cabin.
  • Ventilation system: allows to control the air flow inside the cylinder, thus regulating the speed and movement of the cabin.

As you can see, unlike traditional lifts, pneumatic lifts do not use cables or counterweights.

Its operation is based exclusively on the force of vacuum. This characteristic of pneumatic lifts makes them quieter, more efficient and less prone to mechanical breakdowns.

In addition, their installation is usually simpler, since they do not require the same infrastructure as hydraulic or electric lifts.

What are the Features of Pneumatic Lifts?

The characteristics of pneumatic lifts have made them stand out in the market thanks to their functionality based on compressed air technology. Thanks to this, they offer important benefits, these are some of them:

Compact and aesthetic design

One of the characteristics of pneumatic lifts that most differentiates them from other types is that they do not require cables, counterweights or bulky machinery. This allows them to be installed in areas where a conventional lift would be impossible or invasive.

Furthermore, its aesthetics allow it to function not only as a means of vertical transport, but also as a decorative element that stands out in any environment.

Quiet operation

By not relying on large motors and noisy mechanical parts, as in conventional systems, noise is significantly reduced. This translates into a more comfortable environment for users and their neighbours, especially in buildings or areas where silence is essential, such as offices or shared housing.

Energy efficiency

This type of lift only requires electricity to operate during the ascent phase, as the descent is carried out using gravity, without the need for additional energy. This optimisation allows for greater efficiency in consumption, considerably reducing electrical costs compared to conventional lifts.

Safety and reliability

Due to their design and technology, these lifts incorporate safety systems that guarantee safe operation. One of the most outstanding features of pneumatic lifts is their ability to stop automatically in the event of a loss of air pressure, preventing sudden descents or falls.

In addition to their safety, pneumatic lifts are highly reliable, as they require fewer moving and mechanical parts than traditional lifts.

This reduces the need for constant maintenance and ensures smooth operation over time, minimizing interruptions and providing a more reliable and hassle-free user experience.

Differences between Pneumatic Lift and Electric Lift

Before choosing what type of lift to install, it is necessary to know the key differences between each type of lift, since each has advantages and limitations that make it suitable for different types of applications, buildings and customer needs.

Below we analyze the characteristics of the most relevant pneumatic lifts that you should evaluate to determine which is the best option for your project:

Operation

  • Pneumatic Lift: by not requiring cables, counterweights and heavy machinery, its installation and operation are simplified, reducing the size of the system.
  • Electric Lift: Its most traditional system requires a machine room or additional space to house the motor and other mechanical components.

Size and installation space

  • Pneumatic Lift: Due to its compact and cable-free design, it is ideal for small spaces. It can be installed in areas where other types of lifts wouldn't fit.
  • Electric Lift: usually requires more space, both for the cabin and the machine room.

Energy consumption

  • Pneumatic Lift: It only consumes energy during ascent, while descent is done by taking advantage of gravity. This makes it a more energy-efficient option and, in the long term, more economical in terms of electricity consumption.
  • Electric Lift: Requires energy for both the ascent and descent of the cabin.

Maintenance

  • Pneumatic Lift: Due to its design with fewer moving parts, it tends to require less maintenance.
  • Electric Lift: requires regular maintenance to ensure the good condition of the cables, motor and pulley system.

Costs

  • Pneumatic Lift: Initial installation costs may be higher due to its advanced technology, but low energy consumption and lower maintenance requirements make it an economical option in the long term.
  • Electric Lift: This usually has a lower installation cost compared to pneumatic. However, maintenance costs and higher energy consumption can make the long-term expense higher.

Which one to choose?

Both types of lifts offer significant benefits, and the final choice will depend on your project requirements, usage needs, and your preferences regarding energy consumption, aesthetics, and maintenance.
